Top filmmakers speak at FDCP, TMTCS workshop

AWARD-WINNING pillars of the filmmaking industry graced the four-weekend filmmaking workshop series recently hosted by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and The Manila Times College of Subic (TMTCS). Among those who imparted their expertise to the students of the arts were Joe Alandy, Tey Clamor, Andrea Idioma, and Pepe Manikan who lectured on the different aspects of filmmaking. Among the topics that were tackled during the third week of the workshop series were post-production supervision and management, cinematography, sound design, and musical scoring. The workshop held at SBMA’s Dante Arevalo Ang (DAA) theater in the Subic Bay Freeport District was attended by senior high school and college students from TMTCS and other schools from Olongapo City and nearby provinces. “It’s really satisfying when people share what they know to an appreciative audience. The TMTC students were a wonderful bunch because they showed curiosity and wonder, qualities of good learners. Their questions and insights were spot on and reflected a deep mind and willingness to learn more. I really like people who are like that and it’s people like the TMTC students that inspire me to keep sharing the little I know,” said Manikan, an award-winning composer. The four-weekend filmmaking series came to an end with the conceptualization and implementation of the TMTCS Creative Arts and Multimedia Program (TMTCS-CAMMP) led by TMTCS President Dr. Dante A. Ang and former FDCP undersecretary Liza Diño-Seguerra. The TMTCS-CAMMP aims to provide the learners opportunities and experiences in the creative arts and multimedia. They will be coached by accomplished mentors as they build their skills to become future foundations of the creative sector. TMTC Subic staffer reaps honors for short film

A SHORT film created by a member of The Manila Times College of Subic–Creative Arts & Multimedia Program (TMTCS-CAMMP) has earned accolades from various cinematic award-giving institutions. “Pagtatapos” by Jhonny Mercida Bobier 2nd, a 22-year-old self-learned filmmaker and director, won the Jury Special Citation from the 34th Gawad Cultural Center of the Philippines’ (CCP) Alternatibo for the experimental category and Best Film in the Region Cinema in Region 14 from the National Center for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) National Committee on Cinema. The film is a depiction of how the despair, anxiety, harassment and pressure students go through in and outside of school constantly threaten to kill their passion to continue. “Ang tagumpay ay hindi tungkol sa kung gaano kalakas ang lagapak ng bagsak mo, tungkol ito kung gaano kasakit ang kaya mong tanggapin mula sa mundo at manatili pa ring nakatayo para magpatuloy, ganoon tinatapos ang tagumpay (Success is not measured by how hard you fall. It’s about how you are able to bounce back and continue)!” Bobier said. The TMTCS-CAMMP aims to provide learning opportunities and experiences in the creative arts and multimedia to young people. The program teaches students to continuously build and hone their skills to become future leaders in the creative sector. Dwight Moody E. Bernardo, advertising manager of TMTC Subic, said self-taught youths like Bobier are creating “not just an output you can barely call a movie, but a movie of incredible quality. The writing, plot, direction, execution, and even the editing all feel like they were done by experienced professionals.” For more information on TMTCS-CAMMP, visit www.tmtc.edu.ph or contact The Manila Times College of Subic at 09273658270.
