Community Engagement and Social Accountability
Community engagement is a core component of the Doctor of Medicine Program at The Manila Times College of Subic, School of Medicine. Guided by the principles of social accountability and outcomes-based medical education, the School is committed to addressing priority health needs of underserved and marginalized populations through sustained, community-oriented programs. These initiatives provide essential health services while developing medical students into ethical, compassionate, and socially responsive physicians.
Partnership with the Aeta Communities of Zambales
The province of Zambales is home to indigenous Aeta communities whose cultural heritage is deeply rooted in their natural environment. Despite this rich cultural identity, many Aeta communities experience limited access to education, healthcare, and social services. In response, the TMTCS School of Medicine has established long-term partnerships with Aeta communities within and around the Subic Bay Freeport Zone as part of its commitment to equity and inclusive healthcare.
Through continuous and structured outreach, the School implements community-based interventions such as medical consultations, preventive health services, health education, and support for community development initiatives. These activities are conducted in collaboration with community leaders and local stakeholders to ensure cultural sensitivity, sustainability, and relevance to community-identified health priorities.
Outreach Programs as Service Learning
Outreach activities at the TMTCS School of Medicine are designed as service-learning experiences integrated into the medical curriculum. Students engage in community health activities from the early years of training, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts while developing professional values, cultural competence, and ethical responsibility. These experiences strengthen students’ understanding of the social determinants of health and reinforce the role of physicians as advocates for vulnerable populations.
Learning Within the Subic Bay Freeport Zone
Situated within the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, the TMTCS School of Medicine benefits from a diverse learning environment that includes urban, rural, and indigenous communities. The unique ecological and social landscape of Subic Bay provides meaningful opportunities for community immersion, health promotion, and reflective learning. This environment supports holistic medical education by fostering balance, resilience, and a strong sense of purpose in future physicians.
